Cuban Improvised Mack Armored Car Type 1. Built in 1933.

Cuban Improvised Mack Armored Car (1933)

View Post Friday, October 19, 2012 (http://tanks-and-support-vehicles-1925to1950.blogspot.com.es/2012/10/cuban-improvised-mack-armored-car.html) which demonstrates that oral testimony, attesting that the Cuban armored car was built on a US truck chassis "Liberty", are erroneous.

The armored car was built in 1933, on the chassis of an American truck "Mack AC" of 1917.

At first, not knowing the true origin of the chassis, I decided to call Type 1, but now we know its chassis, the correct name would be "Mack Armored Car"

Note: as you can see by the pictures of the two Post dedicated to Mack Armored Car model, there is little difference in size of the rear platform of wood, between the two vehicles. Are these two different vehicles, or just a small reform?.

Coche Blindado Improvisado Cubano Mack (1933)

Cuban Improvised Garford Armored Car Type 2. Circa 1933.

Cuban Improvised Armored Car Garford, Type 2.

This Cuban Improvised Armored Car Garford (Type 2), for the first time correctly classified, participate in the military parade celebrated in Havana (La Habana) in May 1934, a year after the success of the "Cuban Revolution of 1933".

It was done on a short Garford truck, tractor type (normally used in the U.S. for the transport of large tree trunks, placed on an independent platform towed by the truck). The transmission (4x2) was by the chain on the rear wheel axle (see in the photograph the chain pendant characteristic together with the extensive rear wheel).

We have classified as "Type 2" because earlier (see next post) was another armored car of similar style, but with a longer chassis type, with prominent motor case (unlike this Garford having the engine retracted) and with the back featuring a precarious platform. In this model, which we call "Type 1", is attributed a chassis "Liberty", but the bad quality of photography does not confirm this news or another possible origin attribute.

Apparently the armored car "Type 1" intervened in the fighting in the Hotel Nacional in Havana during the revolution of 1933 mentioned. This action caused some casualties among the crew when, from the terrace of the hotel mentioned, the vehicle received numerous shots through his large hatches.

The Garford Armored Car "Type 2" is very probably made in late 1933 or early 1934, as I was better developed than the "Type 1".

Coche Blindado Improvisado Cubano Garford, Tipo 2.

Spanish Republican 'Field' Armored Truck Type 3, Aragon Front, early 1937.

Spanish Republican 'Field' Armored Truck Type 3.
Aragon Front, early 1937.

Armored Car 'Field', Type 3.

The photography shows one of the two copies of Field Armored Cars Type 3, manufactured in the workshops of the "Construction Field" of Barcelona, in late 1936. Probably were performed on American truck chassis "Federal". The approximate weight of the vehicle was 8,000 kg. Armament consisted of one or more Hotchkiss Machine Guns of 7.7-mm. Also the crew of the Armored Car could fire with their rifles, from five loopholes in the hull and from the passenger seat of the driver as well as from the turret.

Back of the first vehicle, appears partially an Hispano-Suiza 3H6 Armored Car of the First Series, with three men on the turret. These vehicles were also manufactured in Barcelona on the same dates. This photography belongs to a series in which Republican column appears composed of several Armored Cars. The photographs were taken at the Aragon Front in January 1937.

Coche Blindado 'Field', Tipo 3.

Brazilian Constitutionalist Improvised Armored Tractor (Used by the Sao Paulo Civil Guard) Constitutionalist Revolution, Brazil, 1932.

Improvised Armored Tractor used by the Brazilians Revolutionary Constitutionalists in 1932.

It was made for the Civil Guard in the rebellious city of Sao Paulo, during the Constitutionalist Revolution of 1932 against the Brazilian Central Government.

It was built on the basis of a notable dimensions tractor. Form the superstructure of the vehicle two rectangular boxes, one for the engine and one for the fighting compartment and the driver's seat in conjunction. The shield was steel and was coupled to the frame using rivets.

Was equipped with four loopholes, one on each side of the combat box, to allow the use of (probably 1 or 2) Hotchkiss Machine-Guns of  7-mm assigned to the vehicle. On the roof, displaced laterally, carrying a small observation turret. The floor was wooden. The crew consisted of five men, including the driver.

It has been attributed, as a basis for the construction of the armored vehicle, the chassis of a Fordson tractor Model 1922,
which is erroneous, because it was a medium sized tractor, being much greater size armored tractor.

The height of the motor housing was next to 2 m. and the engagement of the box, near to 2.5 m. These measures do not correspond to those of the Fordson tractor of 1922. Also the distance between axes is much larger than the Fordson tractor. It is possible that it is a type Case tractor.

It also ensures that two units were made of this model, although all photographs published to date show the same vehicle, so it was probably the only one built.

*****************************

Danish Citroën Armored Half-Track Car (Prototype, circa 1936).

Danish Citroën-Kegresse Armored Half-Track Car (Prototype, ca. 1936).

The Danish Army in 1932 purchased a single copy of the French Half-Track Car Citroën-Kegresse of 18-HP, which was used for off-road tests, including tests on snow too.

During the next two years participated as a support vehicle of  the wheeled Armored Cars in the Danish Army maneuvers.

Probably the capacity all-terrain vehicle, which lacked the Danish
Armored Cars -made on Ford chassis AA  (4x2)-, motivated the construction of this prototype of Citroën Armored Half-Track Car.

It is quite probable that the "shield" of this unknown prototype (which so far I have not found any reference graphic or written) was built of wood, perhaps coated with a thin steel plate. It is also probable that it was built between 1935 and 1936. The prototype has been in the roof, in a pillbox structure, a French Hotchkiss machine gun.

Coche Semioruga Blindado danés Citroën-Kegresse (Prototipo, c. 1936).

Polish Praga RV Cargo Truck. Summer, 1939.

Polish Praga RV Cargo Truck. Summer, 1939

A strange tour

In the summer of 1939 the Poles received of the Germans 300 truck Prague RV of 2-ton load .

Were provided in compliance with the German-Polish Treaty Rail Transit between West German territory and German East Prussia through Polish territory.

Trucks Prague RV had been commandeered by the Germans after the invasion and occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1938.

After the battles of September 1939, many of these trucks returned to the hands of the Germans, others were captured by the Russians, then others were used to transport the Polish troops to the border of Hungary, where they were interned. This time the trucks requisitioned in the border were transferred to the Hungarian Army.

(Spanish Civil War 1936-39).

Improvised 'Greasy' Armored Car. Asturias Revolution, 1934 Spain.

Improvised 'Greasy Type'' Armored Car. Asturias Revolution, Spain 1934.

In 1934, during the uprising of Asturian coal basin, known as the Revolution of Asturias, created a series of improvised armored vehicles that were used by the rebels. We have identified about 14 vehicles, although they could have been some more.

Almost all of them had three characteristics in common:

1st - unsophisticated craft a bill

2nd - a cover on the back box shaped vehicle roof, remembering very slightly the form of Lancias 1Z and Triota Armored Cars , used in Ireland by the British, and remembering very especially the structure of Peerless-Vickers Armored Car Greeks (*)

3rd - a thick layer of grease (type valvulina) that completely covered the vehicle

This last feature, the most original and surprising, was a practice done with the conviction that the bullets would slide on this layer of grease, preventing penetration into the shield

We do not know the practical result of this application, although it seems to have some
fundament, especially when a projectile will impact on an incline and properly greased.

This practice has not spread outside the Asturian zone. However, two years later, in some of the first Asturian Improvised Armored Cars of the Spanish Civil War of 1936, the practice continued to be used (see the post immediately above).

The drawbacks of the "method of the grease" manifested in the tissue hanging from the door of the armored car in the photograph. Use of this tissue was the only way to enter the vehicle without smudging.

(*) See the two post (see links below) related to these Peerless-Vickers Armored Car Greeks in my other blog, dedicated to Armored Cars of the World War I:

"Armored Cars in the WWI" - http://armoredcars-ww-one.blogspot.com.es/

Greek Peerless-Vickers Armored Car -

Greek Peerless-Vickers Armored Car (Built in 1923)

Coche Blindado Improvisado 'Tipo Grasiento'.
