Police Daimler ‘DZVR’ Armored Car (Schupo-Sonderwagen “DZVR”). Munich, Germany, circa 1943.

Police Daimler ‘DZVR’ Armored Car (Schupo-Sonderwagen “DZVR”). Munich, Germany, circa 1943.

Soldiers belonging to a unit of the Wehrmacht (Police?) pose on a Daimler DZVR Armored Car (probably the "Bayer Landespolizei No. 9") that had belonged, since the early 20's, to Landespolizei Bayern (State Police Bavaria).

These models Daimler, along with other similar of the brands Benz and Ehrhardt, were manufactured from 1921 for exclusive use of the German police.

Several of these armored cars, in view of graphic documents, continued to be used (?) in Germany after September 1939.

An armored car, which is probably the same as that of this photograph, a post appears on the web "Landships", although there erroneously been classified as a Benz VP21.

Note: this post could also belong to my other blog "Armored Cars in the WWI" where there is a post similar to this: http://armoredcars-ww-one.blogspot.com.es/2012/04/daimler-dzvr-armored-car-gepanzerter.html

Coche Blindado Daimler DZVR de la Policía (Schupo-Sonderwagen “DZVR”). Munich, Alemania, circa 1943.

Soviet ISU-122 Self-Propelled Guns in Berlin. April 1945.

Soviet ISU-122 Self-Propelled Guns in Berlin, April 1945.

Two Soviet Self-Propelled Guns ISU-122 (ИСУ-122), belonging to a Heavy Self-Propelled Gun Regiment, on the outskirts of Berlin in April of 1945.

Developed in 1943 on the chassis of Heavy Tank IS-2, was used for the first time, significantly, during Operation Bagration in June 1944.

The ISU-122 was the best self-propelled tank destroyers used by the Soviets. It was particularly dangerous for its powerful cannon A-19S 122-mm., that allowed him to to destroy, over long distances the German Panther and Tiger (160-mm. penetration at 1000 meters distance).

Organized into Independent Regiments, each of which consisted of twenty-one ISU-122: one of command and five in each of the four batteries composing it.

Were made about 5000 units (including improved version ISU-122-S) of which, almost half were destroyed during the fighting defensive Germans, since the summer of 1944 until the end of the war.

Cuban Improvised Mack Armored Car. Havana, Cuba, September 29, 1933.

Cuban Improvised Mack Armored Car (Built in 1933)

Army troops patrolling the square of Fraternity Park in Havana on September 29, 1933, on the occasion of the burial of the ashes of the communist leader Julio Antonio Mella, assassinated in Mexico in 1929, probably by order of the Stalinist Komintern of Moscow.

Shortly after this photograph taken, begin an intense firefight between some snipers and army troops of Batista, who also fired indiscriminately on the participants in the popular manifestation.

The armored car was done on the chassis of an American truck "Mack" AC 1917. Prior to this news, had been assigned to a truck chassis American "Liberty".

The chain drive to the rear wheel and the engine nose unmistakably identify it unquestionably as belonging to a truck chassis Mack AC 1917.

Autocarro Fiat 665 NM Scudato (Italian Armored Troop Carrier)

Autocarro Fiat 665 NM Scudato (Italian Armored Troop Carrier)

A Fiat 665 NM Armored Truck destroyed in a Tito's partisans ambush to an Italian-German convoy, between Comeno and Rifembergo in Slovenia, February 2, 1944.

The Fiat 665 NM Scudato distinguished to the Fiat 626 NM Scudato (among many others differences) by carrying 8 portholes instead of 6 of the latter. Apart from these two basic models, both the Italian and the German made about these or other chassis a significant amount of improvised armored trucks, of similar design to the standards Fiat 665 NM and 626 NM.

In the photo: Tanks T-34/76 Type 1942, along with several motorcycles with sidecars M-72 (used for liaison and exploration) belonging to a Soviet Tank Regiment. Russia, ca. spring 1944.

The Russian M-72 motorcycles of 750 c.c. were a copy of the German BMW R71 motorcycle of the same cylinder capacity. Also the sidecar was a true copy of the German model.

Production started at the factory MMZ in Moscow during the early months of 1941.

Was made on the plans for the R71, provided by the BMW as a result of the Treaty of Non-Aggression between Germany and the Soviet Union (Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact), signed in 1939.

Motorcycles with sidecars usually carried a DP 7.62-mm Ruchnoy Pulemyot Light Machine Gun.

Total production of M-72 motorcycles from 1941 until the end of the war, was 15,335 units, made in different factories in several cities after the evacuation of the Moscow factory in 1941.

Spanish Nationalist Ebro Armored Car Type No. 3, Saragossa 1936 (Spanish Civil War).

Spanish Nationalist Ebro Armored Car Type No. 3, Saragossa 1936 (Spanish Civil War).

The photograph is made in Saragossa, next to Plaza de Toros, probably during the autumn of 1936.

The 'curtains' formed by small front and side chains fulfilling the mission of protecting the wheels, especially the tires, which were of normal type,
ie air chamber.

In the Republican zone was used this same system of "chain curtains" even when carried Armored Car wheels with solid rubber tires instead of air currents and therefore will not need to protect the tires.

Apparently the purpose of applying this comprehensive system protection corresponded to the need to protect the underside of the armored cars of the launches incendiary bottles type "Molotov Cocktail"(*) in close combat, especially in urban areas.

 *****

(*) Molotov Cocktail, origin of the expression. (from Wikipedia in Spanish)
The name and use of this explosive device, has its origin in the Winter War (although it was first used in the Chaco War, Spanish Civil War and World War II). At that time, Viacheslav Molotov (People's Commissar for Foreign Affairs of the Soviet Union), radioed to the Finnish population during the war, the Russian army was not shelling but sending food. Sarcastically, the Finns started to call Russian bombs "Molotov food baskets." The Finnish army declared that if "Molotov put the food, they would cocktails"

Coche Blindado Nacionalista Ebro Tipo Nº 3, Zaragoza 1936 (Guerra Civil Española).

Panzerbefehlswagen III Ausf. D1 (Sd. Kfz. 267). 4th Panzer Division, Poland, September 1939.

A column of Armored Vehicles belonging to Platoon Signals of the one of two regiments Panzer (No. 35 or No. 36) of the 5th Panzer Brigade of the 4th Panzer Division, in route, probably around Warsaw, during the first week of September 1939.

He added Armored Car Radio Section belonging to 1st Platoon of the Armored Signal Company of  79th Signal Motorized Battalion .

This section consisted of a radio car Kfz 15/6 type and Armored Radio Car of eight wheels [Panzerfunkwagen (Sd. Kfz. 263) 8-Rad] or (Pz. Fu. Wg. 263).

The composition of the Signal Platoon of each of the two Panzers Regiments (No. 35 and No. 36) composing the 5th Panzer-Brigade of the 4. Panzer-Division was as follows, according to KStN 1194 of 1.10.1937:

Armored Radio Section
1 x kleiner Panzerbefehlswagen (Sd. Kfz. 265) - Command Light Tank based on the Panzer I.

Armored Radio Section
1 x grosser Panzerbefehlswagen (Sd. Kfz. 267) - Command Medium Tank based on the Panzer III.

NOTE:

Both in the British Army and in the U.S. Army  the term 'Platoon' is equivalent to what in most continental European armies called 'Section' and vice versa.

In almost all armies of continental Europe (Germany, France, Italy, Russia, Spain, etc.), a section consists of four platoons (one of command and three combat). Each platoon is composed in turn of two squads.

In the British and Dominions armies, as well as in
the U.S. Army and some other countries, the order is reversed, ie: A platoon consists of four sections (one of command and three combat). The section consists in turn of two squads.

This would be the organizational structure, from highest to lowest level in a regiment continental armies:

regiment
battalion
company
section
platoon
squad

For the Anglo-Americans and some other armies:

regiment
battalion
company
platoon
section
squad

When an Anglo Saxon author describes a battle group of six platoons, is referring to a battle group of about 270-300 men.

But when an “Continental” author describes a battle group composed of six platoons, is referring to a battle group of about 60-70 men.

This is an important issue that must be kept in mind, both for readers and translators. And this is especially so when the texts describing tactical combat to levels of company, battalion or regiment.
