Soviet ISU-122 Self-Propelled Guns in Berlin. April 1945.

Soviet ISU-122 Self-Propelled Guns in Berlin, April 1945.

Two Soviet Self-Propelled Guns ISU-122 (ИСУ-122), belonging to a Heavy Self-Propelled Gun Regiment, on the outskirts of Berlin in April of 1945.

Developed in 1943 on the chassis of Heavy Tank IS-2, was used for the first time, significantly, during Operation Bagration in June 1944.

The ISU-122 was the best self-propelled tank destroyers used by the Soviets. It was particularly dangerous for its powerful cannon A-19S 122-mm., that allowed him to to destroy, over long distances the German Panther and Tiger (160-mm. penetration at 1000 meters distance).

Organized into Independent Regiments, each of which consisted of twenty-one ISU-122: one of command and five in each of the four batteries composing it.

Were made about 5000 units (including improved version ISU-122-S) of which, almost half were destroyed during the fighting defensive Germans, since the summer of 1944 until the end of the war.
